Sasha Martinengo – lover of music and sports, particularly Formula 1 – is understandably a South African radio heavyweight. Sasha, who has been with the station for 14 years, currently presents on 5FM weekdays from 09:00 until 12:00.
Says Sasha aka DJ Cool: “Radio should be any DJs first passion. In my opinion there are too many DJs currently who are in the job for the publicity and not the passion of actual radio.
“Aside from the radio medium, my passions are music and sports, specifically Formula 1. I am a technology maniac and love new gadgets. My biggest love is cars and I love admiring, driving and lusting over cars.”
It all began for "The Italian Stallion" in 1994 when he started doing the regulatory graveyard shift (01:00 to 04:00), which he did for two and a half years, finally filling in on the night radio slot in October1997.
"From being a tennis coach to working in a bank, to working for Virgin records. I even tried my hand at being an estate agent!" says Martinengoof his days before radio. "A lot is said about DJs and how they get into radio. I was one of the lucky ones, where my desire and passion to do this job outweighed anything else I was doing. I knocked on doors andeventually the door at 5FM opened for me. It has a lot to do with luck, andperhaps I am lucky sometimes."
Martinengo is not about to stop pushing the boundaries whether it’s on air on in any other facet of his career. The Italian Stallion clearly has voice for radio as well as a face for TV and he presents F1 on Supersport. Martinengohas also become a popular choice as MC or DJ for a host of entertainment and club events.
